Harold was an athlete in Watford City from 1956-1960. Harold, from his "forward position" led the Watford City High School Wolves team in basketball scoring with 227 points during the regular season and led the Wolves to a 21-4 season record including a 3rd place finish in the Regional Tournament. Harold ("Hammer") also started 2 years in Wolves football at Defensive end and Offensive end positions. In Track, Harold was the top point getter for the Wolves team placing consistently in the high jump, 880 yard run, and the high and low hurdles. Harold participated and placed at the State Track Meet with a fourth in the 180 low hurdles and third in the 880 yard run. Harold pitched for 4 seasons. He went 13-0 record his last season and struck out 13 hitters in a 1-0 victory over Mohall. Harold received the American Legion Medal of Honor in his senior year for courage, leadership, honor, service, and scholarship. Harold after high school then attended Dickinson State College where he earned 12 letters in sports as he participated in cross county, football, basketball, and track. He was an honorable mention All-Conference in basketball his junior year and was a four year starter. In Track, Harold set 5 college records in the 220 yard hurdles, 440 yard hurdles, 880 yard run, the steeplechase, and as a member of the mile relay team. Harold set the District track records in 440 yard hurdles, 880 yard run, and the mile relay. Harold also placed in the National Track meet in the top 8 in both the 880 yard run and 440 yard hurdles. Harold was selected to the Dickinson State College's Hall of Fame in 1986. Harold had coached at Bismarck State College and his teams won 127 games in girls basketball including one State Junior College state title. Harold was selected to the Bismarck State College's Hall of Fame in 2015.
