Doug was an athlete for Watford City High school from 1957-1961. | Football: 4 year letter winner - Senior Quarterback - Co-Captain - Led the team in rushing, passing and scoring. Junior - Led the team in rushing, passing and scoring. Sophomore - Starting running back and linebacker. | Basketball: 4 year letter winner. Co captain senior year. Lead the team in scoring (19 pts./game) and assists. Named to the All conference basketball team. | Track: Senior - Won the 220 yard dash at State. 2nd in the 100 Yard Dash at State. Anchor the 440 and 880 yard Relays both taking 2nd Place at the State meet. Set the 220 yard record at the Badlands Conference at 22.2 sec. which still stands. Junior - Anchor the 440 and 880 yard relays to 1st Place finishes at the State meet. Attended Minot State University and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1998. Doug earned nine letters participating in football, basketball, and track. He earned 3 letters in track. During his tenure he set the record for 220 dash at 21. 5 (of which he is still the co-holder). He was a member of the record setting 880 relay and the mile relay. Sanford qualified for the national NAIA track meet in the 220 yard dash in 1962. In baseball, He helped his team to a conference (1962) and district title in (1963) and a national tournament in 1962.
